World Marrow Donor Day, a global thank you

Today, 21st September, marks World Marrow Donor Day (WMDD), a day dedicated to recognizing and expressing gratitude to stem cell donors globally. This observance, held annually on the third Saturday of September, is an initiative of the World Marrow Donors Association (WMDA) and highlights both bone marrow and umbilical cord blood donations. On this significant day, we emphasize the crucial role of voluntary stem cell donations in treating patients with various blood disorders, including myelofibrosis (MF).

The Role of Stem Cell Donation in Myelofibrosis Treatment

Stem cell donation plays a critical role in the treatment of myelofibrosis, a type of MPN that affects the bone marrow and blood production. Myelofibrosis leads to scarring of the bone marrow, which impairs the production of blood cells and can cause anemia, fatigue, and increased susceptibility to infections and bleeding. For patients with myelofibrosis, stem cell transplantation remains one of the few treatments with the potential to cure the condition.

On World Marrow Donor Day, we acknowledge the essential contribution of stem cell donors who provide hope and a chance at life for those affected by myelofibrosis. With over 35 million potential donors registered worldwide, the availability of these stem cells is crucial for patients in need of a transplant. When a patient with myelofibrosis requires a stem cell transplant, their hematologist may first search national registries for a suitable match. If none is found, the search extends to international registries, underscoring the importance of global cooperation in finding the right donor.
