Meet John Hoogland, Co-Creator of MPN Journal I MPN Hope Series

At the Global MPN Scientific Foundation, we believe that every patient story builds hope. Through our MPN Hope series, we highlight voices from around the world, people living with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) who turn personal challenges into shared strength.
Today, we introduce John Hoogland, a patient from the Netherlands who is not only navigating life with an MPN, but also helping hundreds of others do the same. He is one of the three co-creators of the MPN Journal, a digital symptom tracker and awareness tool built by patients, for patients.

John's Journey with MPN
John was diagnosed with Polycythemia Vera (PV), was living an active, high-paced life as an entrepreneur and sports enthusiast when persistent fatigue and physical changes began to disrupt his routine. After being diagnosed with an MPN, he faced confusion, frustration, and a steep learning curve.
He soon realized that one of the biggest gaps in care was tracking symptoms over time. Patients often struggled to explain their condition to doctors, and subtle changes went unnoticed. Part 1 of his story:
Why the MPN Journal?
Alongside two other MPN patients, John decided to act. Together, they created the MPN Journal:A free, anonymous, online tool that allows patients to:
Track physical symptoms, emotions, and treatment responses
Spot trends over time
Share meaningful reports with their doctors
Feel seen, validated, and in control
John shares,
"We wanted to create something simple and honest. Something we wish we had when we were diagnosed."
What began as a small idea has now grown into an essential support tool used by people in over 10 countries.
