World Transplant Patients Day: donation can offer a new opportunity for life

On World Transplant Patients Day, the Global MPN Scientific Foundation recognizes all people who have undergone a transplant, their families, the healthcare teams who support them, and those whose decision to donate makes it possible for others to have a new opportunity.

Donation is one of the most generous acts a person can offer. In many diseases, a transplant can become an essential therapeutic option. For some people living with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), especially patients with myelofibrosis, a bone marrow transplant may be part of the medical pathway when considered appropriate by the specialist team.
Every transplant carries a story. A story of waiting, uncertainty, decisions, support, recovery and hope.
The value of donation
Talking about transplants also means talking about donation. Behind every procedure, there is a network of people, professionals, families and donors who make it possible for life to continue in a different way.
Donation allows many patients to access treatments that may change the course of their condition. In the case of bone marrow transplantation, finding a compatible donor can be a decisive step for some patients with hematological diseases.
That is why, on this day, we want to highlight the importance of learning about donation and recognizing the impact this act can have on the lives of others.
Donation is not only a medical act. It is also a deeply human one.

Bone marrow transplant and MPN
Myeloproliferative neoplasms are blood diseases that can evolve very differently from person to person. Some people live for years with medical follow-up and treatment. In other cases, the disease may progress and require more complex options.
For selected patients with myelofibrosis, a bone marrow transplant may be considered by the medical team as a therapeutic option. It is a demanding process that involves preparation, hospitalization, continuous follow-up and a recovery that can be long, both physically and emotionally.
This is why listening to the experiences of people who have gone through this process is so important. Their stories help others understand what a transplant may mean beyond clinical information.
Montse’s story, one year after transplant
To mark this day, we are sharing the interview “One year after bone marrow transplant: Montse’s story.”
In this conversation, Montse speaks openly about her experience after undergoing a bone marrow transplant to treat her myelofibrosis.
Throughout the video, she shares what it was like to leave the hospital, return home, face physical and emotional changes, receive support from her family and adapt to a new reality.
Her testimony offers a valuable perspective for patients, families and caregivers who are facing, considering or trying to better understand this process.

Support, information and community
The transplant journey does not end when a person leaves the hospital. For many patients, recovery means learning to listen to the body, adapting to new rhythms, accepting moments of uncertainty and relying on those around them.
Family support, medical follow-up, reliable information and connection with other patients can be very helpful throughout this process.
At the Global MPN Scientific Foundation, we believe in the importance of sharing real patient experiences, providing clear information and strengthening an international community where people living with MPN can feel more supported.
On World Transplant Patients Day, we thank donors, recognize transplant patients and offer special support to those who have undergone a bone marrow transplant as part of their journey with MPN.
Every story matters. Every donation can open a new possibility. Every testimony can help someone feel less alone.
