The full webinar featuring Dr. Georgina Bendek, hematology specialist based in Argentina, is now available to watch.
This session, organized by the Global MPN Scientific Foundation (GMPNSF) in collaboration with MPN LATAM (part of GMPNSF), offers a clear and up-to-date overview of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs).
It helps to better understand conditions such as polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and myelofibrosis (MF), combining accessible scientific information with the shared experiences of patients from across Latin America.
Understanding MPNs: from biology to daily life
During the session, key concepts are explored to better understand how MPNs develop, including the role of the bone marrow, the JAK2 mutation, and the JAK-STAT pathway.
This approach connects scientific knowledge with real-life experience, offering a broader understanding of both diagnosis and treatment.
Current treatments and emerging research
The webinar also presents an overview of current therapeutic strategies, including treatments such as ropeginterferon, ruxolitinib, hydroxyurea, and phlebotomies in the management of polycythemia vera.
In addition, it highlights emerging therapies like rusfertide and bomedemstat, which are part of ongoing research in MPNs.
One of the key topics discussed is the importance of allele burden as a relevant marker in monitoring disease progression and treatment response.
The patient experience as part of knowledge
A central part of the webinar is the inclusion of patient voices from Latin America, sharing their experiences living with MPNs.
Topics such as treatment side effects, physical activity, stress management, and access to therapies are addressed, offering valuable insight into the day-to-day reality of patients.
These perspectives reinforce the importance of a holistic approach that considers both medical care and emotional wellbeing.
