International Yoga Day: wellbeing is also part of the MPN journey

Breathing, moving gently and reconnecting with yourself can also be part of care. On International Yoga Day, the Global MPN Scientific Foundation would like to highlight a practice that may offer meaningful support for physical and emotional wellbeing.

Yoga is much more than physical exercise. It is a practice that combines gentle movement, conscious breathing, mindfulness and connection with the body. For people living with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), this type of approach may be especially valuable, as life with a chronic condition can bring fatigue, stress, emotional strain, changes in energy and the need to find moments of calm and self-care.

Why talk about yoga in MPN?

Each person experiences MPN differently. At some stages, fatigue may be the main challenge. At others, it may be uncertainty, emotional burden or the need to recover a sense of balance.

In that context, adapted yoga may offer a complementary tool to support wellbeing. The aim is not physical performance or demanding exercise. It is about finding a gentle and respectful practice that helps people listen to their bodies and create a space of calm.

It is important to remember that these practices do not replace medical treatment. They are intended to complement it from a more holistic perspective.

Four benefits of yoga that may be especially helpful for people living with MPN

1. It may help reduce stress and emotional tension

Living with MPN can bring moments of concern, uncertainty and emotional overload. Through conscious breathing and present-moment awareness, yoga may help create a sense of calm and reduce accumulated tension.

2. It supports gentle movement and mobility

Not everyone can do intense exercise, and the body does not always respond in the same way. Yoga offers a way to explore gentle movement, adapted to each person’s possibilities, helping support mobility, flexibility and a sense of physical activation.

3. It encourages connection with the breath and the body

When the body changes or persistent symptoms appear, people may sometimes feel disconnected from themselves. Yoga invites people to reconnect with their breath, notice how the body feels and cultivate a kinder relationship with themselves.

4. It may support overall wellbeing and quality of life

Wellbeing is not measured only through medical results. It is also reflected in how we sleep, how we breathe, how we move through the day and how we find small moments of balance. In that sense, yoga may become part of a self-care routine that supports quality of life.

A broader, more human way of caring

On International Yoga Day, we would like to remember something simple: supporting wellbeing is also part of supporting the person.

In MPN, care is not only about medical information or treatment. It is also about creating spaces that help people breathe, find calm, reconnect with their bodies and feel supported by a community that understands this journey. Because wellbeing does not replace medical care, but it may help people live the process in a more holistic, conscious and human way.
