A recognition that reflects a lifetime of impact
In 2022, GMPNSF had the honor of presenting Dr. Silver with the Recognition Award during the 3rd MPN Spring Symposium, acknowledging his lifelong dedication to MPN research and his pioneering work in a field that, at the time, was largely unknown. Also, Prof. Heinz Gisslinger was awarded together with Dr. Silver due to pivotal contributions to MPN research.
This recognition was a reflection of something the entire community shares: a deep sense of gratitude for a life devoted to improving the understanding and treatment of MPNs.

A pioneer in MPN research
Dr. Silver’s contributions to the field of MPNs are difficult to fully capture.
He was instrumental in introducing interferon as a treatment for MPNs, opening new therapeutic possibilities that continue to benefit patients today. His work also contributed to the development of key clinical approaches and research pathways that have shaped modern hematology.
For many patients, especially those living with polycythemia vera (PV) and other MPNs, the treatment options available today are, in part, the result of his vision and commitment.
Beyond research, Dr. Silver was known for his compassionate patient care, his generosity as a mentor, and his ability to inspire those around him.
Moving forward with gratitude
At GMPNSF, we join the global MPN community in honoring Dr. Silver’s life and legacy.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and all those who were touched by his work.
His contributions will continue to live on, in research, in treatment, and in every patient who benefits from the path he helped create.
Because progress in MPN is built on the work of those who came before us.
Thank you, Dr. Silver ❤️
